Narrative Theorists: Claude Levi-Strauss’ Binary Opposition Theory
Claude Levi-Strauss’ theory of ‘binary opposites’ claims that the majority of narratives in media forms such as book and films, will contain opposing main characters.
For instance in the film Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023) the characters Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) are both opposite in many ways. However, their most distinguished difference is Kens desire for love versus Barbie desire for meaning.
